BIG SUR, California: Following a two month closure of California's famed Highway 1 along scenic Big Sur, the roadway is set to reopen on April 30.

The highway, snaking through California's rugged coastal cliffs, has been closed since January 28.

At that time, officials said that heavy January rains caused a landslide, which took out 150 feet of the roadway.

Highway 1 at Big Sur is a world renowned roadway traveling between mountains and rugged ocean coast.

California officials have "been focused on the emergency work needed to increase the resiliency of this highway section to extreme weather, and the fixes made will allow for safe travel," said Toks Omishakin.

Road repairs included adding drainage systems to protect the roadway from rain flow, rising sea levels and coastal erosion, officials said.

The cost of repairing the road and installing safety infrastructure, including new guard rails, is set at $11.5 million.
